Prompts for Visuals & Cinema: The Director's Framework

Stop typing '8k masterpiece'. Learn how real photography lighting, camera lenses, and physical textures unlock photorealism in Midjourney and Flux.

← View Academy Curriculum HubCurriculum Track: Advanced Creative & Logic

If you type "A warrior in a forest, 8k resolution, photorealistic, masterpiece" into Midjourney or Flux, you will get an image that looks neat. But you probably had very little control over how it turned out.

That is because visual AI models don't care about buzzwords. What they actually understand is the physical language of cinema and photography.

The 3 Pillars of Visual Prompts

  • 1. The Subject: Who is the hero? (e.g. "A weathered sea captain in an oiled wool coat").
  • 2. The Environment: Where are they? (e.g. "On the rain-slicked wooden deck of a schooner in turbulent North Atlantic seas").
  • 3. The Lighting: How does light hit the scene? (e.g. "Low late-afternoon amber sun cutting through storm spray, casting long dramatic shadows").
❌ THE BUZZWORD PROMPTPLASTIC & CHAOTIC
"A cool cyberpunk girl in Tokyo, 8k, photorealistic, masterpiece, trending on artstation."
What happens: Plastic video game skin, generic floating neon signs, and random distorted background buildings.
✅ THE DIRECTOR'S PROMPTPHYSICAL & CINEMATIC
[SUBJECT] A street vendor wearing a transparent PVC rain jacket. [ENVIRONMENT] Narrow Shinjuku alleyway after heavy evening rain. [LIGHTING] Dual neon reflections in street puddles: deep cyan and warm amber rim light. [CAMERA] 50mm prime lens, f/1.4 aperture, authentic 35mm film grain. --ar 16:9
What happens: Real water droplets on vinyl, natural skin pores, realistic depth-of-field bokeh, and authentic film still texture.
