Have you ever noticed that if you ask an AI the exact same question three times, you get three slightly different answers?
That is controlled by a dial called Temperature.
Think of temperature like heating water in a pot. At low temperature (freezing cold), the water molecules stay still in a solid ice block—predictable, rigid, and unchanging. As you turn up the heat, the molecules bounce around with energy—fluid, chaotic, and creative.
The Temperature Scale
- 0.0 — 0.2 (The Ice Block): Pure determinism. The AI chooses only the most statistically probable next words. Perfect for coding, spreadsheets, math, and data extraction.
- 0.5 — 0.7 (The Sweet Spot): Balanced conversation. Clear, fluent, and slightly varied. Ideal for emails, blog drafts, and customer support.
- 0.8 — 1.0 (The Creative Spark): High entropy. The AI explores unexpected word combinations. Perfect for fiction, marketing taglines, and brainstorming names.
Avoid temperatures above 1.3 unless you want surreal poetry. Improbable tokens cause syntax breaks and unreadable sentences.
